Academic Qualifications


Here are the educational requirements to be eligible to apply to this internship program:

  • You are a student pursuing your first university degree/bachelor/undergraduate programme and at least enrolled in the final year at the time of application.
  • You are also eligible if you are pursuing your second university degree or a higher graduate programme such as a Masters degree or Ph.D programme at the time of application.
  • You can also apply if you have already graduated provided you are able to start your internship within a one year period after graduation from a bachelor, masters or Ph. D programme.
  • The intership lasts for a minimum of two months and a maximum six months.

Language Fluency


You have excellent command of English. The three working languages of the UN are English, French and Spanish. Fluency in two or more of these landuages is an advantage.

United Nations Internships in Kenya: The Application Process


To apply to a UN internship in Kenya, you are required to submit an online application.

Visit the United Nations internship programme in Kenya page to learn more about the programme and the minimum eligibility criteria.

To view the open positions and submit an application, you need to register or log in on to the United Nations Careers Portal.

Fill up the UN Internship Application Form also known as the personal History Form (PHP) and include your work experience, IT skills and three references.

You are also required to upload proof that you are enrolled in a course of study and also stating your expected date of graduation. Find the enrollment proof template at the bottom of this page.

The enrollment proof should have an official letterhead or an official seal of the academic instution where you are enrolled.

Are UN Internships in Kenya Paid?


Internships at the United Nations are on a volunteer based. No remuneration is to be expected.

You will need to cover your own travel and living expenses, insurance and accommodation or find a sponsor.

                    About This Internship Opportunity

                    This full-time placement will provide an opportunity for a lawyer with knowledge of women’s issues and relevant law to develop their legal skills whilst assisting our programme with:
                    · Legal research on international and comparative human rights law and practice with respect to the protection of Women’s Property Rights
                    · Preparation of materials for legal trainings and meetings on the application and development of standards in this context

                    Interns’ Expenses

                    • the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for travel (including to and from the office), visas, accommodation, etc.
                    Insurance
                    UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship. As interns are not covered under any insurance, including MAIP, they should not travel to hazardous locations in the course of their internship with UNDP.
                    Applicants for internship must show proof of valid medical and life/accident insurance for the duty station for which they will work. It must include adequate coverage in the event of an injury or illness during the internship which:
                    • requires transportation to the Home Country or Country of Residence for further treatment 
                    • results in death and requires preparation and return of the remains to the Home Country, or Country of Residence.
                    Subsequent Employment
                    The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
                    Should an offer of employment be envisaged, a 3-month break, from the end of the internship, must be respected. Interns cannot apply for posts during the period of internship.
                    UNDP may accept interns providing the following conditions are met:
                    Enrollment:
                    • Enrolled in a bachelors/masters programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship (if a candidate is graduating before the internship period begins, they are no longer eligible); or
                    • Pursuing their university/college studies, having completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree, if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
                    • Not have graduated prior to the beginning of the internship.
                    Skills:
                    • Proficiency in English required. Fluency Somali or in Arabic is an asset;
                    • Computer literate in standard software applications;

                    Reporting to the GIS Officer, her/his specific duties will include:
                      
                    Identify map information needs and GIS data sources;   
                    Conceptualize and prepare maps and other cartographic products; ensure that the products meet the requirements of concerned ACTED departments;   
                    Work closely with the data Management Officer to ensure an accurate and dynamic linkage between GIS Unit and ACTED databases;   
                    Aid in data collection, entry, and analysis as needed, ;   
                    Prepare metadata for all spatial information;   
                    Manage spatial datasets, and verify and update collected data; maintain the strictest confidentiality of sensitive data; ensure protocols for usage and licensing of procured GIS datasets are carefully followed;   
                    Co-develop GIS components in proposals and supervise implementation of approved projects; and

                    Master degree in GIS- experience in GIS work will be an added advantage
