2013 UN Internships In Kenya- Finance Intern Opportunity at the United Nations Office in Nairobi


The UNON – Budget and Financial Management Service internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the department.

UNON is the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, and other key UN agencies with vital administrative and technical support services.

UNON offers internships in Nairobi for undergraduate and graduate university students. The internships have duration of three to six months and are on a volunteer basis.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities of the Finance Intern

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Accounts Service Section: Petty cash and third party reporting, Record interoffice voucher expenditures incurred by UNDP on behalf of UNON, UNEP and UN-HABITAT, Bank reconciliation, Adjustments and Follow up on UN-approved documents in IMIS, Review of ledger entries for correct coding. Billings of services provided, analysis and reconciliation of accounts receivables, follow-up with clients for outstanding payments, offset receivables with payments made – applied deposits, monthly reporting , Write-off cases and charge backs & recording of income for; Video conferencing, computer accessories, office supplies and water, language & training and conference services.

Staff Claims and Payroll:
Processing of staff claims, computation of entitlement due or amount refundable, Inform Payees of claims status, Maintain statistics to monitor performance and whenever possible, client satisfaction, process DSA/Advances, petty cash advances. Hand Carried DSA, invoices, vendor statements and other payment requests.

Treasury:
Deliver cheques and documents for signature by authorised signatory panel, Prepare UNHQ Investment/Recall memo, take minutes, manage TSU library and delivery book, pay stipend cheques, receipting of Cash/Cheques, creation of deposits on contributions, sorting and despatching of receipts to UNEP and UN-Habitat, Cheque preparation and documentation, bank reconciliation, Deposits on returned payments and Handling Eserve. Updating of email address on CTS, Sending of email addresses to clients, Batching cash for banking, maintenance of bank signatory panel, general office administrative tasks and any other tasks that may be assigned.

Educational Requirements

Applicants must be enrolled in a degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.

Languages


Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
